When you're planning a move, it's critical to have a plan for your packing materials. You may be surprised at how many types are out there and how many can be helpful to you, especially if you've acquired a variety of new items during your residence at your current home. Moving blankets, also known as furniture pads, are just as crucial for your move as boxes.
Moving Blanket FAQs
Here are some of the most common questions we get regarding moving blankets.
Are moving blankets necessary?
If you have furniture, you need moving blankets. They're the most effective way to keep your furniture and other oversized items intact.
Are moving blankets waterproof?
They are not typically waterproof, but many are constructed with materials that resist water. If you want water-resistant moving blankets, look for those with "poly" in the name, like polyester or polypropylene.
Are moving blankets flammable?
Yes. However, those made out of polyester or similar materials provide some flame resistance.
Do moving blankets block or reduce sound?
Yes. Moving blankets are frequently hung in rooms to dampen echoes and reverberation, reducing noise overall.
How do I use moving blankets?
Begin by covering the top of each item with one or more moving blankets. Apply mover's rubber bands or tape around the sides of the item and the bottom if desired. Check that all sides of the item are covered, and load it into the vehicle.
How many moving blankets do I need?
There are two ways to estimate. You can start with about 12 blankets per bedroom in the home or estimate that you will need one blanket for every 5 square feet of space in the moving truck.
Can you rent moving blankets?
Yes. Many people choose to rent moving blankets from a moving service, so they don't have to worry about storing them long-term.
Can moving blankets be washed?
Most moving blankets can be washed as long as you are careful to follow the manufacturer's instructions for doing so. Most recommend line drying over machine drying to preserve longevity.
What are moving blankets made out of?
Moving blankets are typically made of a polyester and cotton blend, although you can sometimes find them made of wool, burlap, or microfiber.
What size moving blankets do I need?
Most people opt for the standard large-size blanket, measuring 72 inches by 80 inches. The larger size is more versatile since you can easily cover a smaller item with a larger blanket.
